Competition Details

Amateur Classes

(Exhibitors who are not employed to work with flowers or plants)

Class 1: "Colour at my window"

A planted window box. The chosen plants do not have to be from the same natural flowering season, but they must all be happy to live in the same temperature range and require more or less the same watering and light conditions. Accessories may be incorporated but must not detract from the plant material in the exhibit.
Table top display:- space allowed 100cms (39") long, 40cms (16") deep, no height restriction. Exhibits will be staged towards front edge of table to allow any trailing plants to flow over the edge.

Class 2: "Small is beautiful"

A petite exhibit in suitable sized container created from ALL FRESH materials with NO accessories added. The exhibit must not exceed 25cm x 25cms x 25cm high (10" x 10" x 10" high)
Staged on table top, space allowed 46 cms x 46 cms (18" x 18")


Craft Classes for juniors

Class 3a (open to age 6 to under 12 years at Show date): "Decorated shopping bag"

Class 3b (open to age 12 to under 16 years at Show date): "Decorated shopping bag"

Sturdy paper or fabric carrier/tote type bag decorated with any dried or artificial materials ; glued, stitched or wired on to its outer surface in any decorative style. The bag must be capable of being staged in an upright position on the table top (it must be appropriately/artistically "stuffed" with tissue etc to aid this!). Any bag with shop names on the outside MUST have the names concealed in some way under the decoration.
Space allowed 40cms x 40cms (16" x 16")

Class 4 (open to age under 10 years at Show date) : "Fairy's Garden"

Exhibit on a household tray (round or rectangle) using garden soil, oasis or plasticine/modelling clay as a securing/anchoring medium for the materials.
Any flower or vegetable material and artificial decoration and/or accessories may be incorporated.
Display space 71 cms x 51 cms (28" x 20")

Class 5 (open to age under 10 years at Show date ): "Beastly Creature"

Using a vegetable for the main body part create the ugliest beastly creature you can think of. The other parts of the creature can be made from fruits, vegetables or any artificial wires, strings, twigs , buttons etc. Anything you can think of to make it a horrible creature!
Display space 40cms x 40 cms (16" x 16")


Professional classes open to all florists and floristry students

Class 6: "Design for a Diva"

The hand tied bouquet is to be delivered as a 30th birthday gift for a Diva (both theatre and television) from a couple of her show biz friends. Fresh material must predominate. The exhibit must be displayed in the competitor’s own glass vase and the water must contain Chrysal flower food. A card attached must state the name of the Diva.
Display space - 61cms x 61 cms (24" x 24"). No height restriction.

Class 7: "Wedding on a Florida Beach"

Table decoration with a beach theme. Dining tables are round and seat 10 guests. Fresh flowers and natural materials must predominate.
Display space 51cms x 51cms (20" x 20"). No height restriction.

Class 8: "Farewell with a flourish"

A Contemporary Funeral Cross which must measure between 70cms (28") and 100cms (39") in length. This cross is for the funeral of a leading floral designer and demonstrator. He always promoted the use of natural and bio degradable products and materials wherever he demonstrated. He has been much admired, for over 25 years, across the whole industry for his modern, thought provoking, cutting edge designs. Don't be afraid to let your imagination run a little wild, he would just love that! Fresh and natural materials MUST predominate.
Staged at FLOOR level, laid on top of your own suitably covered wholesaler’s flower box.


Open Class - no restrictions

Class 9: Bridal bouquet - "Weaving her magic"

Fairy tale wedding in a castle, the bride dressed like a pale pink meringue, with a figure like Paris Hilton! Lots of mysterious and wispy decorations used; trails of flowers, ribbons, delicate fabrics and foliages draped and hanging around from the mantelpieces, iron chandeliers, window ledges and rafters in a very small ancient banqueting hall at a tiny medieval castle.
Staged on tabletop (supply your own bouquet stand and any drapes). Space allowed 61cms x 61cms (24"x 24"). No height restriction.

Competition Regulations

General

  1. Classes 1 - 5 inclusive will be judged in accordance with NAFAS Competitions Manual 2001 edition.
  2. Classes 6 - 9 inclusive will be judged in accordance with the Society of Floristry Marking Scheme.
  3. All exhibits must be the unaided work of the competitor EXCEPT Junior Craft classes where teachers/parents may give minimum verbal guidance BUT NOT help in any way with construction of exhibit.
  4. Exhibits in the junior classes will not be eligible for Best in Show award.
  5. All exhibits and exhibitors’ property will be at the risk of the exhibitor. The organisers and their agents can accept NO LIABILITY for any loss or damage sustained by or to any exhibits or exhibitors or their property.
  6. It is unwise to bring handbags with valuable contents or to include valuable items in the exhibits.
  7. The use of aerosol sprays and unauthorised electrical equipment is prohibited within the marquee.

Entries

  1. Exhibitors may stage only ONE exhibit in each class.
  2. Entry fees: Adult classes 10 euros per exhibit and Junior classes 5 euros per exhibit.
  3. Cheques/postal orders should be made payable to LORETO HOUSE.
  4. Entry forms and fees must be received by Mary Gallagher, Loreto House, Linsford, Buncrana, Co. Donegal before the closing date of TUESDAY 29 APRIL
  5. Fees are not refundable but if you are sick you may nominate a replacement.

Staging

  1. All staging tables will be covered with BLACK fabric. There are no background drapes but exhibitors may provide their own if they so wish with suitable means of attaching these to table.
  2. Exhibits will be staged in a marquee with natural lighting.
  3. The organisers will decide the positions of all exhibits. All measurements in the instructions are approximate.
  4. All exhibits must be staged within the space provided.
  5. Competitors are reminded that sufficient space should be left in the containers to allow for watering by the stewards. The organisers reserve the right to remove any faded or dying plant material AFTER judging has been completed. Competitors MUST attach a card to exhibits which must not be misted/watered.
  6. Staging times: Exhibits to be staged between 2pm and 7pm on Thursday 1st May.
  7. Judging will be completed by 10am Friday 2nd May. The decision of the judges is final Judges will be available to discuss competitors’ queries and answer questions on Monday afternoon.
  8. Dismantling: Exhibits must be cleared between 4.30pm and 8pm on Monday 5th May. Any exhibits remaining after this time will be removed and disposed of.

Awards

Prize money awarded will be a percentage of total entry fees for each particular class less 5% Adult and Junior classes.
Presentation of prizes will take place in the Marquee at 4pm on Monday 5th May
